Prologue
Every person carries a question that they rarely say out loud: where do I really
come from? Not from which city or family — but from which chain of events, a
chain that started long before any name existed.
This book tries to follow that chain. It starts with the birth of the Universe and
ends with a decision the reader will make tonight. It begins with cosmology,
because without a sense of scale, we cannot understand our own place. It moves
through evolution, because without it, we cannot understand why humans are the
way they are. It looks at the systems that control the behavior of billions of people
— money, power, technology, and shared beliefs. And it ends where everything, in
the end, actually happens: at the moment of a single choice.
This is not a book that promises answers. It tries to describe the mechanics — the
way an engineer describes how a bridge is built, without judging what the bridge
will be used for. Fire warms and destroys in the same way. The laws of gravity
hold a planet in orbit and pull a person to the ground in the same way. The
systems described in this book work the same way, no matter what the person
using them wants. There is only one real difference: does a person see the
mechanism, or do they act inside it without knowing it exists?
I wrote this book based on his own experience in several very different systems —
business, government offices, and systems that exist at the edge of the law. Each
of them taught something specific. This book tries to bring that separate
experience together into one picture.

In this edition, the reader will find a short version of the original thirteen
chapters. The ideas and arguments are the same, but they are told again in a style
closer to a scientific essay than to a list of short, powerful statements. The goal of
shortening the book was not to make the ideas simpler, but to remove repetition
and keep only what still matters after time passes.
Read the book in order. The ending only makes sense for someone who has
followed the whole path from the beginning.

Chapter 1. The Universe
1. The Place of the Human Being in the Physical World
Before we talk about human beings, we need to set up a system of reference. Not
a country, not a continent — but the physical reality in which everything happens.
The planet the reader lives on moves around a medium-sized star at a speed of
more than one hundred thousand kilometers per hour. Of the eight bodies that
circle this star, Earth is the third one, and this exact distance is why liquid water
— and therefore life — could exist. The zone where water can stay liquid is very
narrow on a cosmic scale: a small shift of the orbit in either direction, and the
planet would become either a furnace or a block of ice. This is not a miracle in a
mystical sense. It is the result of physical laws that work the same way
everywhere in the Universe. But the scale of the coincidence that led to this good
result is worth stopping to think about.
The Sun is one of hundreds of billions of stars in the Milky Way galaxy. It sits
somewhere on one of the galaxy's spiral arms — not at the center, not at the edge.
At the center of the galaxy there is a supermassive black hole, millions of times
heavier than the Sun. This is a limit beyond which the physics we know in
everyday life stops working. There are more than two trillion such galaxies in the
visible Universe, and each one holds billions of stars, each with planets around it.
At the same time, most of the Universe is invisible. Dark matter and dark energy
make up more than ninety-five percent of everything that exists. We cannot
observe them directly — only through their indirect effects on the matter we can

see. This point is worth remembering, because we will return to it later: reality is
mostly made of things a person cannot see.
Nothing in the Universe stands still. The planet spins on its own axis and moves
around the Sun. The Sun moves inside the galaxy. The galaxy moves inside the
Universe, which is itself expanding. There is no such thing as standing still —
there is only movement too slow to feel.
2. The Formation of the Earth
The Universe was already about nine billion years old when a planet began to
form from a cloud of dust and gas left over from the birth of the Sun. Small
particles collided and stuck together. Gravity worked steadily and without mercy,
turning a chaotic mass of matter into bigger and bigger bodies. This process is
called accretion, and it is not a gentle one: nature builds up matter through
collision, destruction, and rebuilding.
The young Earth looked nothing like the photos we see from orbit today.
Constant asteroid impacts, temperatures hot enough to melt rock, and
radioactive decay inside the planet meant its whole surface was melted lava, with
no breathable air and not a single drop of liquid water. But even in this
environment, physics was already at work: heavy elements like iron and nickel
sank toward the center under gravity, while lighter materials rose to the top. This
is how the iron core and the rocky crust formed — a process called differentiation,
a principle that applies far beyond geology alone.

A key event of this early period was a collision with an object about the size of
Mars. Some of the material thrown out by the impact did not scatter into space —
it gathered into orbit and formed the Moon. The Moon, which the reader sees
every night, is a piece of that catastrophe. Without that impact, there probably
would be no stable tides, and without stable tides, there might be no good
conditions for life to appear. One catastrophe set the stage for everything that
followed.
Millions of years of cooling let water vapor condense and fill the low areas of the
crust — this is how the oceans appeared. The first atmosphere had no oxygen: it
was a mix of carbon dioxide, methane, and ammonia — a mixture that would
poison most life forms today. It was in this environment, in warm water, that the
processes began that would eventually lead to life.
3. The Origin of the Solar System and the Beginning of Life
Before Earth existed, there was only a cold cloud of gas and dust where the Solar
System is now. Some outside push — maybe a shockwave from a nearby
exploding star — caused this cloud to collapse under its own gravity. Mass built
up at the center, and pressure and temperature rose, until nuclear fusion began:
hydrogen started turning into helium, and light was born from a dark cloud.
Around the young Sun, a disk of leftover matter spun, and from this disk the
planets formed: rocky planets closer to the star, where it was hotter, and gas
giants farther away, where it was colder.
Science cannot say much with full confidence about how life began — the exact
mechanism is still unknown. But the general picture is fairly convincing. In warm

water near hot springs on the ocean floor, simple chemical compounds interacted
for millions of years, until, among countless random combinations, a molecule
appeared that could copy itself. Not a cell, not an organism — just a molecule
with one property: self-copying. That was enough to start natural selection:
copies with errors that gave an advantage spread further; copies without that
advantage disappeared. Selection with no mind, no goal, and no plan — a
principle that would keep working for billions of years to come.
About three and a half to four billion years ago, there lived an organism that
geneticists loosely call LUCA — the Last Universal Common Ancestor. It was a
single cell, with no organs and no brain, but with a metabolism and the ability to
pass genetic information to its offspring. Every living thing today, including
humans, comes from this one line. LUCA was not the first form of life — other
lines existed before it — but it was the first whose descendants never stopped.
4. Domination and Disaster
For billions of years after that, bacteria remained the dominant form of life on the
planet — quiet, but completely changing its makeup. One line of bacteria learned
to use sunlight to produce energy. Oxygen was a by-product of this process, and
at first, it was poison to most organisms of that time. This large-scale
environmental crisis, which caused a mass extinction, also opened the way for
organisms that could adapt to an oxygen-rich world and get access to a far more
powerful energy source.
With the arrival of oxygen, more complex cells appeared — cells with a nucleus
and internal structures. Later, cells began to join together into multicellular

organisms with a division of functions. About 540 million years ago came what is
known as the Cambrian explosion — a sharp increase, on a geological timescale,
in the variety of animal species: eyes, jaws, shells, and limbs all appeared.
Competition between predators and prey started an evolutionary "arms race" that
still continues today and is one of the main drivers of the variety of life we see
now.
About 230 million years ago, dinosaurs came to dominate the planet, and they
ruled for 160 million years — five hundred times longer than humanity has
existed. But domination does not guarantee a future. Sixty-six million years ago,
an asteroid about ten kilometers wide hit what is now Mexico, releasing energy
billions of times greater than the strongest nuclear bomb ever made. The result
was the extinction of about three-quarters of all species. No system, no matter
how successful it looks, lasts forever — an outside force can change everything.
The survivors were small warm-blooded creatures that hid in burrows and lived
unnoticed while the dinosaurs ruled. The lesson of this episode is simple and, at
the same time, harsh: it is not the strongest or the biggest that survives, but the
one that can adapt to new conditions faster than others.
5. From Primates to Humans
After the disaster, an empty world let mammals quickly fill the ecological niches
that had opened up — a process called adaptive radiation. Among them, a branch
of primates formed, whose life in the trees required precise depth perception,
flexible limbs, and, eventually, a bigger brain to move through a three-

dimensional environment. In a sense, the trees turned a primate into a thinking
creature.
When the climate began to change and forests retreated, giving way to open
savannas, some primates came down to the ground. Walking upright gave them a
wider view of the land, but the main result was that their hands became free to
handle objects — first sticks and stones, and later tools made on purpose. Tools
completely changed the rules of survival: the advantage now went not to the
strongest, but to whoever used the available tools more effectively. A more
complex environment, and the need to plan group actions — hunting above all —
pushed brain growth: over two million years, the brain grew about three times
larger, an extremely fast pace by evolutionary standards.
Language played the decisive role — the ability to talk not only about what is
happening right here and now, but also about the past, the future, and
hypothetical situations. This made it possible to pass accumulated knowledge on
to the next generation, so each generation did not start from zero but from where
the previous one had stopped. Cultural evolution, which relies on this kind of
transmission, is far faster than biological evolution.
6. Many Human Species
The common idea that human evolution is one single line leading straight to
modern humans is too simple. Tens of thousands of years ago, several species of
the genus Homo lived on the planet at the same time: Neanderthals, who were
physically stronger than Homo sapiens and well adapted to cold climates; Homo

erectus, who was the first to learn how to keep fire going; the Denisovans, known
mostly from genetic material; and other, less known lines.
The exact reasons why most of these species disappeared are not fully known, but
one pattern is clear: Homo sapiens had the ability to organize much larger groups
— hundreds or thousands of people — united not by family ties but by shared
abstract ideas: symbols, beliefs, and a common language able to carry complex
concepts. This is not an advantage in direct one-on-one fights. It is an advantage
in the scale of organization — and scale wins consistently in evolutionary
competition.
Still, the disappearance was not total: modern human populations carry between
one and a few percent of Neanderthal and Denisovan DNA. In this sense, no
living Homo sapiens is a "pure" example of one species — everyone carries traces
of other lines that disappeared tens of thousands of years ago.
7. The Genetic Unity of the Species
The outward differences between people — skin color, facial shape, body build —
create an impression of deep difference. Genetic data shows the opposite: all
people on the planet share about 99.9 percent of their DNA. For comparison, the
genetic difference between a human and a chimpanzee is about two percent —
which means any two humans from different continents are genetically far closer
to each other than a human is to its closest relative among the primates.
The visible differences are explained by adaptation to the local environment: the
amount of melanin in the skin correlates with the strength of sunlight; body build

relates to climate (a more compact body keeps heat better); nose shape relates to
air humidity and temperature. These are results of natural selection acting over
thousands of generations of populations living apart in different climate zones —
not a sign of different origins.
Genetic studies trace the maternal line of modern humanity back to a population
that lived in Africa around 150,000 to 200,000 years ago. Every person alive
today descends from that community, which later spread across the whole planet.
There is no biological basis for dividing humanity into a ranked system of "races"
— there are only populations with different frequencies of certain genes, caused
by geographic isolation, not by any basic difference in nature.
8. Mastering Fire and Becoming the Dominant Species
If we had to pick one technology that changed the course of human history most
radically, it would be control over fire. Cooked food is digested far more
efficiently than raw food, which allowed the gut to shrink and freed up energy for
the brain to grow — an organ that, in modern humans, uses about twenty percent
of the body's total energy. Without cooking food, such a brain most likely would
not have had enough energy to exist.
A bigger brain made it possible to plan actions that had not happened yet — in
other words, to think in terms of the future instead of only reacting to the present.
But the decisive advantage was the ability to store and pass on knowledge beyond
individual memory — first through spoken tradition, then through symbols, and
finally through writing. Each new generation did not start from zero, but from the
level the previous generation had reached — a mechanism with no equal in the

animal world, and the reason why human progress sped up so much over the last
few thousand years.
9. The History We Skip
The period from the first civilizations to today — Egyptian dynasties, the Roman
Empire, the Middle Ages, the Industrial Revolution, the two World Wars — is left
out of this book. Not because it is unimportant, but because it has already been
described in detail, and well, in thousands of other sources. Still, it is worth
noting four institutions that appeared in this period and shaped the structure of
the modern world: writing, which freed knowledge from the limits of individual
memory; the state, which solved the problem of coordinating millions of
strangers through laws and symbols of authority; religion, which kept people
following social norms even when no one was watching; and trade, which
connected distant communities through mutual dependence.
The main conclusion of this overview is simple: over these thousands of years,
humans have barely changed biologically. The same brain that once planned a
hunt for a large animal now plans financial deals; the same hierarchical instincts
shape the structure of modern organizations. The tools have changed. Human
nature has stayed almost the same. This observation is the key to understanding
everything that follows.

Chapter 2. Money
1. The Nature of Money
Most people use money every day without ever asking what it really is. Money is
not paper, not numbers on a screen, and not gold in a vault. Money is an
agreement: a collective agreement among billions of people that a certain symbol
has value and can be exchanged for other value. This agreement does not rest on
any physical backing — it rests on belief. This is the same principle that connects
money to religion and to the state: all of them exist only as long as enough people
believe in them.
As a tool, money does several things at once: it measures the value of things that
cannot otherwise be compared (an hour of a doctor's work, a kilogram of bread),
it replaces barter, which limited trade to the size of a single village, it lets people
store the results of their work over time, and it gives access to people,
information, and opportunities.
The main mistake most people make is confusing money with wealth. Money is a
liquid tool of exchange. Wealth is the ability to generate resources and control
your own environment no matter what is happening around you. A person with a
large sum in their bank account, but no assets, no skills, and no system, is not
wealthy — they are simply holding a tool that is slowly losing value. One sentence
is worth remembering: money is a result, not a goal — the result of value created,
problems solved, systems built, and trust earned.
2. How Money Came to Be

Money was not invented by one person at one moment — it appeared as a
solution to a specific problem. Barter only works when both sides happen to want
exactly what the other one has at exactly the same time — a condition that makes
it impossible to run an economy bigger than a small village. The solution was to
choose a universal equivalent — a good that everyone was willing to accept: salt,
livestock, shells, grain, and later, metals, which do not spoil, are easy to divide,
and are relatively rare.
The next steps — from coins, to notes backed by stored metal, to paper money, to
digital records in bank databases — were a steady rise in abstraction: each step
made exchange simpler at the cost of relying more heavily on trust in the system.
Modern currencies are not backed by gold or any other physical asset — they rest
only on an agreement backed by the authority of the state that issues them. When
this agreement breaks down, the result is hyperinflation or default — something
that has happened many times in history and, most likely, will happen again.
3. The Structure of Control
Money is not a neutral tool with no owner. Every monetary system has architects,
and they build it to work mainly in their own favor. The first level of control
belongs to the state, which decides on the official currency and demands that
taxes be paid in it. The second level is commercial banks, which, through the
practice of fractional reserve banking, actually create money: a bank takes a
deposit, keeps only part of it as a reserve, and lends out the rest, and this loaned
sum, once deposited in another bank, creates a new loan — so, starting from one

deposit, the system produces several times more money without printing a single
new bill.
The third level is central banks, which set the interest rate that determines the
cost of credit across the whole economy: a decision made by a few people at a
central bank meeting affects the cost of a mortgage and the buying power of the
savings of millions of people who had no say in that decision. The fourth level is
the credit system as a whole: debt is, in essence, future labor sold today. A person
who understands this uses credit as a tool to move faster. A person who does not
understand it becomes its hostage.
It is important not to oversimplify this picture: there is no single center that
controls all the money in the world — there is a multi-level system of checks and
balances. But one pattern holds true within it: those who understand the rules
use them to build wealth; those who do not understand them pay taxes and
interest, wondering why they never have enough money.
4. Money Versus Wealth
Income and wealth are not the same thing, and confusing the two costs many
people a lifetime of financial instability. Money is a static number: a snapshot of
what you have at a given moment. It does not protect itself from inflation, it does
not create new money on its own, and it runs out as soon as the source that
produced it stops.
Wealth is a system that produces a flow of income no matter whether the owner
is constantly present. The basis of such a system is assets — a business, real estate,

investments, intellectual property — things able to bring in income without the
owner's direct involvement in every transaction. A steady flow matters more than
a one-time sum: a person with a stable, even modest, flow of income is financially
stronger than a person with a large lump sum and no source to refill it.
The highest level of financial maturity is not owning assets, but understanding
the mechanics of how to build them — this makes it possible to rebuild a system
from scratch if the previous one is lost. This is why people who lose everything
often recover faster than people who received capital without understanding the
system that produced it: money can be taken away, but knowledge cannot.
5. Ways to Earn Money
There are at least seven basic ways to turn value into money, and most people
only ever use one of them in their whole life. Labor — trading time for pay — has
a hard limit: a day has a fixed number of hours, so income cannot grow beyond
that limit. Skills add value to an hour of time through rarity and how hard they
are to acquire: the market pays not for effort, but for the value of the result.
Business moves the source of income away from the owner's personal time and
into a system that can run without their direct involvement. Being a middleman
monetizes access — the ability to connect two sides that would not otherwise find
each other. An information advantage turns into decisions made earlier or more
accurately than competitors make them. Audience attention has become an asset
in its own right in the digital world, where control over attention converts directly
into income. Finally, status and reputation let people monetize trust: for the same
result, the market pays differently depending on whose name stands behind it.

Each level in this list reduces how much income depends on the owner's personal
time — and this direction, not simply working harder, is the real path toward a
financial system that runs on its own.
6. Capital, Assets, and the Cycle of Building Wealth
Income and capital are not the same thing. Income is a flow that depends on a
person's current activity and stops when that activity stops. Capital is a stored
resource that can work without the owner's direct involvement. A person with no
capital must start from zero every time a source of income disappears. A person
with capital has a buffer that keeps working even while they are temporarily not.
The most important practical distinction in personal finance is between an asset
and a liability. An asset brings in income: a share in a business, rented real estate,
dividend-paying investments. A liability takes money to maintain without
producing any income in return: a loan for a luxury item, a home that produces
no income, status symbols that only show spending. A common mistake is
treating a liability as if it were an asset, which quietly undermines financial
stability even when nominal income is high.
Stability is not about how much you earn, but about how well you control the flow
— the gap between what comes in and what goes out. The cycle that gradually
changes a person's financial path looks like this: part of income is saved, it turns
into capital, capital is put into an asset, the asset produces an additional flow of
income, and that flow is turned into capital again. At the start, this cycle is slow,
but it builds on itself over time — so the amount of time spent inside the system
matters more than the size of the starting sum.

7. Risk as a Condition of the Game
The common idea that the goal of financial behavior should be to avoid risk is
misleading: risk is not a problem to be solved — it is a basic condition of any
growth. The market consistently rewards accepted uncertainty: if a result is
guaranteed in advance, that guarantee is already priced in; but a person who
deliberately accepts unpredictability is rewarded when the outcome turns out
well.
It is important to tell the difference between a conscious risk — a decision with an
unknown result, made with a clear understanding of the stakes — and reckless
gambling, where a decision is made with no analysis of possible consequences at
all. Risk shows up in several forms at once: financial (losing invested money),
time-related (years spent moving in the wrong direction, which, unlike money,
can never be gotten back), reputational, and market-related (outside changes that
break a model regardless of what the person does). Managing risk means
spreading bets across several options, testing ideas with small steps before
committing on a large scale, keeping a reserve that allows you to survive a failure
without disaster, and knowing exactly the maximum possible loss before making
a decision.
One kind of risk deserves special attention, because it is rarely recognized as risk
at all: the risk of doing nothing. Not making a decision is also a decision, and its
consequences — savings losing value to inflation, skills becoming outdated,
opportunities missed — simply show up more slowly, so people rarely connect
them with their true cause.

8. Time as a Resource That Cannot Be Recovered
There is one basic difference between money and time: money can be earned
again, but spent time cannot. An hour that has passed is gone forever, and this
happens at the same speed for every person, no matter their income or status.
This is why the way a person exchanges their time determines almost everything
else about their financial situation: selling time for hourly pay has a hard ceiling,
while building systems that work independent of the owner's daily presence frees
up time as a resource for strategic decisions instead of just carrying out tasks.
9. Psychology, Environment, and Long-Term Money Habits
A person's attitude toward money is not shaped by rational analysis but by early
experience: watching how parents dealt with having enough money or not having
enough, and beliefs formed in childhood that money "corrupts a person" or, on
the contrary, is the only real measure of success. These beliefs continue to control
an adult's financial behavior far more strongly than any conscious intention — so
changing a person's financial path often requires first examining these
unconscious beliefs, and only then changing specific actions.
The environment around a person works in the same direction: a social circle that
treats a certain level of spending, risk, or ambition as normal will gradually pull
an individual's own standards toward it — a mechanism related to the dynamics
of collective systems described later in this book. Poverty and wealth, in this
sense, should be seen not as an amount in a bank account, but as self-sustaining
systems of habits, beliefs, and environment: poverty through a cycle of spending
with no saving, wealth through a cycle of saving that flows into assets. Moving

from one system to the other requires changing not just income, but the whole
pattern of behavior around it — including what is passed on to the next
generation: the financial habits and understanding of the system passed down to
children often shape their path more than the size of any inheritance.

Chapter 3. Technology
1. Technology as an Amplifier
The common idea of technology as a set of objects — a phone, an app, a device —
is shallow, and it costs those who believe it dearly. Technology is not a thing. It is
an amplifier of human ability. A tool helps you finish a task in proportion to the
effort you put in; technology changes the whole formula, letting you reach a result
that a single person could never reach no matter how many hours they worked.
Technology amplifies human ability in four areas: physical strength, processing
information, communication, and, more recently, thinking itself. The result of
this amplification is a very unequal outcome: two people with the same
knowledge and the same skills, but different access to tools, get results that
cannot even be compared. At the same time, technology alone does not guarantee
any result — it only reaches its full potential in the hands of someone able to use
it as a lever within their work.
2. Five Stages of Technological Evolution
The development of technology has gone through several stages, one after
another, and each stage moved part of human labor onto an outside process.
Tools — from a sharpened stone to the wheel — amplified physical strength but
still left the human being as the one who carried out the process. Machines,
which appeared with the Industrial Revolution, were the first to replace a
person's direct physical involvement, turning them into an operator or manager
of the process instead. Computers automated routine intellectual work —
calculation and storing information. The internet removed geography as a limit

on communication and the exchange of knowledge. Artificial intelligence now
automates thinking itself — analysis, writing text, and making basic decisions —
which, for the first time in history, moves onto an outside tool a function that
used to be considered purely human.
At every one of these turning points, the people who understood the new logic
first gained an outsized advantage; those who waited for it to become obvious
entered the game only after the advantage had already gone to others.
3. Effects on Work and Competition
Artificial intelligence does not replace whole professions — it automates the
routine, repeated parts within them, shifting income away from people who do
routine tasks by hand and toward people who build and use automation systems.
This is not a new principle: every past technological revolution caused a similar
shift in income. It is only happening faster and on a bigger scale this time.
The internet and globalization have removed geography as a limit on income: a
specialist from any city can now serve clients around the whole world, and a
digital product can be sold to an unlimited audience with no extra cost for each
new sale. But that same openness also raises the bar for competition: access to
the global market is symmetrical, and it is open to everyone at the same time.
4. Speed as a Competitive Advantage
In the past, time favored the careful: careful preparation, and only entering the
market with a finished product, made sense in a world of slow, predictable cycles.
In an environment where access to information is measured in seconds, and

market conditions shift in months instead of years, that same cautious strategy
becomes a source of falling behind: while one player is still preparing, another
has already launched a minimum working version of a product, gotten a real
reaction from the market, and adjusted direction based on fact instead of
guesswork.
In this environment, results come not from the original idea but from the speed
of testing it: a short cycle of "act, observe the result, correct" consistently beats a
slow cycle of "plan, prepare perfectly, launch." A mistake caught early, on a small
scale, is cheap. The same mistake caught late, after major investment, is
expensive. At the same time, speed without structure turns into chaos: the best
strategy combines fast testing on a small scale with a controlled — not rushed —
move to scaling up a model that has already been proven to work.
5. Technology as a Mathematical Multiplier
There is a basic difference between adding a resource in a straight line — for
example, hiring one more person — and the kind of multiplication that comes
from the right technological tool: one specialist with the right set of automated
tools today can do the work that used to require a whole team. Scale appears at
the exact moment a process starts to run without a person's constant presence —
when a system handles orders, produces reports, or manages communication on
its own, and this scale is no longer limited by the number of hours the owner can
physically put into the work.
Technology does not make a weak system strong — it amplifies what is already
working. This is exactly why the gap in results between someone who uses

technology as a lever and someone who ignores it is not a straight line. It grows
wider every year.
6. The Risks of a Technology-Driven Environment
It would not be honest to talk only about opportunities. Technology amplifies
weaknesses too: automation destroys routine tasks the fastest, dependence on a
single platform turns a business into a hostage of someone else's algorithm, and
too much available information creates overload that lowers, rather than
improves, the quality of decisions. Technology is also designed to hold our
attention — and a person who does not consciously manage their own focus lets

and the cultural scripts pushed by the environment around them.
